This Hispanic segment of the Crucian populace is mostly of Puerto Rican lineage. The US bought Vieques from Puerto Rico during the Second World War and evacuated its inhabitants. Many moved to St Croix because of its resemblance to Vieques. These people have fitted in well, but also kept a few of their old ways. They frequently speak a mixture of Spanish and Crucian English in a unique form of Spanglish.

Continental Americans make up about 13% of the population and mostly live on the eastern side of St Croix. Arab Palestinians are also a sizeable minority owning most of the petrol stations and supermarkets on St Croix. Other modern immigrants have moved from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Philippines.

The issue seems to have been sorted out when in 2009, the proposed U.S. Virgin Islands Constitution voted by the Fifth Constitutional Convention laid down three definitions of U.S. Virgin Islanders: “Ancestral Native Virgin Islander”, who have ancestral ties (and their descendants); “Native Virgin Islander”, who were born on the island (and their descendants); and “Virgin Islander”, who are any United States citizen who has lived in the region for five years.

Christianity, in the guise of Protestantism is the predominant religion, although the Hispanic community is Roman Catholic. There are also small groups of Jews and followers of Rastafari, Islam.

Burglars look for homes that seem vulnerable. Most burglars are opportunistic. In other words, if they see an open door or window or if it is obvious that no one is at home and if there is no noticeable security, then it is worth them attempting to get in. Open gates are also an incitement. So are valuable possessions put on show in windows.

It only takes minutes to steal something, you would be astonished. I let two armed criminals into my house and they timed 15 minutes to take everything of value in my house and then a car pulled up outside to pick them up. It was night time and I was tied up. It could have been a taxi, which would not have aroused my neighbours’ suspicion.

It is important to show people (opportunistic thieves) that you have a home security system of some type. If you cannot afford a proper, working alarm system, get a dummy siren box with a flashing light. It is not as good as a real system, but it would take a brave or desolate burglar to find out, which means that you cannot tell anyone at all, in case it gets out.

A home security system is well-worth the money you will spend on it. The anxiety of being burgled or even held up, as I was, will make you wish that you were more security conscious. But it does not stop when the burglars go away. Then the police come and I spent from midnight until 4AM at the police station. I had to go back at least a dozen times after that. My insurance company had dozens of questions and it took four months to get a disbursement.

I felt sure that the burglars knew me, and I felt threatened everywhere I went for months. I could not stop staring into people’s eyes to see if I could recognize my intruders’ (they had masks on, but I saw one man’s eyes). My life has changed drastically. I even moved out of my house the next day and never went back again.

As I said before, I had a good system in place, but I had turned it off as soon as I got home and opened the front door to my intruders. My suggestion is to get a wired or wireless home security system and, if you can afford it, get a monitored home security system with at least one surveillance camera, but preferably one on each external wall and one inside in the hall.

Obtain contact sensors for all external doors and vibration sensors for all windows. Put a personal panic button by all external doors and have garden lights that are switched on by motion or body heat outside. Keep your system activated and be very suspicious of who you open the door to.

City-bound hotel holidays or long, driving holidays are not very enjoyable for your dog. If a dog is going to be at home all day, he would prefer be in his own home all day. Likewise, with driving. I felt awfully guilty and my dog would not ’speak’ to me for a week. Really! No eye contact, no tail wagging, would not always come when called, no happy running about, just a hang dog expression for seven days. She must have felt that I let her down badly, which of course I had, by not researching the kennels.

A fantastic place to take your dog is St Croix in the United States Virgin Islands. The US Virgin Islands are factually part of the United States of America and you can go there without a passport, with your US dollars and with your dog.

Not every hotel allows animals just as in continental USA, but there are loads that do. There are also package holidays that will take you and your dog from the airport to the island hotel and back again all for one price.

Of the four main islands in the US Virgin Islands, St. Croix is most likely the best option for going to with a pet dog, because it is less heavily populated than the other islands and is by far the largest.

The hotel or resort will probably not provide feeding dishes, bedding and toys but they will surely have a store where you can buy such things. It is perhaps not worth bringing your own either unless you have a large suitcase and a decent weight allowance. Food for your dog will also be extensively available on the island, of course.

St Croix has various sorts of landscape and plenty of activities to take full advantage of them. There are beautiful tropical beaches just right for swimming or playing in the shallows; there are the undulating plains of the old plantations, which are perfect for long walks and there are hills, mountains and rain forest to explore with your dog too.

However, this is not to say that the hand held bug killer cannot be used outside, so long as it is not raining. It should be handled just like any other high voltage electrical item. Keep the hand held insect zapper dry and please do not use it when you are standing in the pool!

Models do vary greatly, but there are basically only two kinds of hand held bug killer: the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric insect zapper. Both models are equally effective at killing bugs and employ the same principle.

The electric bug killer looks like a ‘junior’ tennis racquet, but with three sets of ’strings’, which are in fact wires. The central grid of wires becomes live at the push of a button while the other two networks, one on either side, are earths.

When an insect is caught between the wires of the hand held insect zapper, it creates a short, which vaporizes it instantaneously with a loud crack. The electric insect zapper will kill other insects too, but they tend to burn rather than explode.

I have been using the rechargeable type for five years and am extremely satisfied with the indoor insect zapper. In fact, the electric bug zapper has come a long way over the last few years. A fully charged electric bug killer is strong enough to last for several hundred swipes and will hold it’s charge, when unused, for weeks without any significant discharge.

The rechargeable battery unit will take intensive use for the best part of a year, although its ability to hold a charge for a few weeks gradually diminishes after six or seven months.

The latest indoor insect killer I’ve had has a main on/off switch, a light that comes on when it is live (the brightness of this light also gives an indication of the battery’s strength) and a light that comes on when it is plugged in for recharge.

The instructions on the wrapper say that it should be (re)charged for about sixteen hours. I usually put it on charge over night once or twice every week or two, although the hand held bug zapper shows a large increase in performance with only a couple of hours recharging.

The latest version I’ve used also comes with a strong beam called a ‘headlamp’. I have found this very handy when walking in the garden, but I’m unsure whether it’s meant to attract the flies in the dark so that you can zap them if you’re feeling bored or just vindictive, rather like an Anglerfish.

I’ve used the headlamp on my electric bug zapper for that reason too, but the beam uses a lot of battery power. All in all, the hand held bug killer is a huge asset to any outdoor event. The electric insect zapper is useful for ‘clearing’ your bedroom before retiring; it’s unbeatable for killing evening mosquitoes and it will eradicate wasps at a lunch table too.
