Acai Scam

Found in the Amazon Rainforest, the aa berry is but one of the fruits located there and has recently been dubbed a super berry. The rainforest is a perfect location for it, since the aa berry prospers in swampy or floodplain areas. It comes from a palm tree and is known as the Tree of Life to the Brazilians because of its ability to provide an abundance of healthy food.

The acai berry, in actuality, is not a berry at all. It is a fruit, similar in size and appearance to the grape, and it comes from a type of palm tree that grows in Central and South America. While the soft, inner part of the palm, called heart of palm, is often eaten in salads, the fruit portion of the plant is now very popular as a nutritional supplement. It is sold for a multitude of uses, most commonly as a weight loss supplement.

Because the fruit does not last long after it is harvested, it is mostly available to anyone outside of the Amazon as a juice or frozen. It also cannot be eaten in raw form, but rather in pulp form. That has not stopped its popularity. The dark, purple skin is what contains a majority of the healthy benefits. The natives of Brazil have been passing down recipes to create purees, which you can warm as a sauce over grains or entrees like meat and fish. The aa berry can also be frozen for a sorbet-like dessert.

The slender palms grow from 40 to 80 feet tall and have leaves up to 10 feet long. Each palm can produce more than 50 pounds of berries annually. The harvesting of this powerful antioxidant rich product has become a major industry in Brazil and employs up to 30,000 people on a daily basis to harvest and process the product. Unfortunately the fruit deteriorates rapidly after harvesting (active properties can disappear after 24 hours) and so it is restricted to being eaten in the growing region or being processed and shipped as juice or frozen pulp. This industry has become an economic and environmentally-friendly alternative to unsustainable harvesting of hearts of palm, logging and conversion of the rain forest to farming or ranching.

The acai berry has recently been touted as a great antioxidant, also. Certainly, it can be beneficial to add to your supplement regimen for this reason alone. This is a relative newcomer in the world of antioxidants, as previously the most popular antioxidants were the greens. Red and purple antioxidants are coming into their own and being recognized as very beneficial as well. You have probably always heard that it is a good idea to eat as many natural green, red and yellow vegetables and fruits as possible. The same holds true for supplements. Although the supplement itself may not be colored like the fruit or vegetable, incorporating the supplement from these multi-colored sources will ensure that you reap the maximum antioxidant benefits in your diet.
